INDIA's Maiden Mission to MARS.

no alt
After a journey of over 10 months, India’s Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) arrived at Mars on Wednesday, 24 September 2014 – following an insertion burn that was confirmed at 7:30am India Standard Time (02:00 UTC; 20:00 EDT in the U.S. on Tuesday, 23 Sept.) – to continue what has so far been a successful technology demonstration mission to showcase India’s entry in the realm of interplanetary research.
Mars Orbiter Mission history:
Beginning as a feasibility study in 2010, the Mars Orbiter Mission (MOM) was green lit by the Indian government on 3 August 2012 following completion of a $21 million series of studies surrounding the mission.
Z6With approval and appropriations in hand, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) undertook an expedited 15 month construction process on the spacecraft, aiming for a target launch date of 28 October 2013.
The launch date was calculated to meet the trans-Mars injection requirements needed to place MOM into the correct heliocentric Mars transfer orbit.
These calculations included the location of the launch facility in India, the desired orbital insertion parameters at Mars, and the orbital positions of Earth and Mars vs. the location where Mars would be at the time of MOM’s arrival.
Construction on MOM was successfully completed on schedule on 2 October 2013, and the spacecraft was shipped to its launch site in Sriharikota.
2014-09-23 21_52_40-India MOM PSLV - Google SearchThere, MOM was integrated on top of its PSLV-XL (Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle) rocket – which had been under assembly since 5 August.
The use of the PSLV-XL rocket was a change from the original mission proposal which called for the use of the more-powerful Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV).
However, the GSLV had failed twice in 2010, and a fix to the root cause of the issue was not available by the time MOM needed to launch in October 2013.
Not wanting to delay the mission until 2016 (when the next Mars launch window would open), the ISRO decided to put MOM atop the less-powerful PSLV rocket in its XL variant – six stretched solid rocket motors using 12 tons of solid propellant instead of the 9 tons used in the standard PSLV variant.

Rather, the craft would have to launch into Earth orbit and then perform a series of orbit raising maneuvers designed to increasingly raise the its apogee while using Earth’s gravity to sling-shot it into the correct Mars transfer orbit. The switch in launch vehicle, however, meant that MOM could no longer be launched directly into a Mars transfer orbit.
As launch preparations continued, MOM’s launch date was realigned from 28 October to 5 November 2013 because of the delayed arrival of a necessary telemetry ship at the Fiji Islands.
2014-09-23 21_51_12-ISRO MOM Launch - Google SearchOn 5 November 2013, the MOM mission lifted off right on time at 09:08 UTC from First Launch Pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre. Over the next 42 minutes, the PSLV-XL inserted MOM into Earth orbit, a process completed at 09:50 UTC.
With MOM’s successful launch, India began its first interplanetary mission.
The day following launch, a series of four planned orbit raising maneuvers began, controlled by spacecraft engineers from the Spacecraft Control Center at ISRO’s telemetry, tracking and command network in Peenya, Bangalore.
Z5Of the four planned maneuvers, the first was a 416 second firing of the spacecraft’s liquid engine, the second a 570.6 second burn, and the third a 707 seconds burn.
At this point, MOM’s apogee was 71,636 km.
During the fourth burn, an under burn prevented the spacecraft’s apogee from reaching the planned 100,000 km. Instead, MOM was in a 78,276 km apogee orbit.
The resulting under burn mandated the addition of a fifth and sixth orbit raising maneuver to boost the spacecraft to an apogee of 192,874 km.
With the needed apogee achieved, spaceflight controllers initiated a 23 minute engine firing maneuver on 30 November 2013 at 19:19 UTC to place MOM into a heliocentric transfer orbit to the red planet.

Cruise to Mars:
Since leaving Earth orbit, a total of three trajectory course maneuvers have been performed to ensure that MOM is aligned into the proper trajectory for Martian arrival.
On 22 September at 09:00 UTC, spacecraft controllers successfully fired the 440N liquid apogee motor for 3.9 seconds.

The test firing confirmed the engine’s viability for planned orbital insertion operations 41 hours later.
Mars Orbital Insertion:
As MOM approached Mars for orbital insertion, the spacecraft reoriented itself to align its thrust vector with the craft’s line of travel.
2014-09-23 22_01_44-India MOM PSLV - Google SearchOnce in the proper orientation, MOM, already under the influence of Mars’ gravity, passed into the shadow of Mars.
This entry into the Martian shadow occurred five minutes before the start of the Mars Orbit Insertion (MOI) burn.
As the MOI burn began, MOM’s main liquid engine and eight smaller thrusters fired to begin reducing the vehicle’s velocity by 1,098.7 m/s.
As this burn began, the spacecraft moved behind Mars as viewed from the telemetry and tracking stations on Earth, thereby severing the radio communications link between the spacecraft and ground controllers.
The duration of the mission-critical MOI burn occured while communications with the spacecraft were blocked.
After the MOI burn:
Once the MOI burn was completed, the spacecraft began reorienting itself to point its main communications antenna toward the location where Earth will be when the spacecraft emerged from the communications blackout period.
Z9With MOI burn successfully accomplished, MOM, at 07:30 IST (02:00 UTC; and 20:00 EDT on 23 Sept.), entered a highly elliptical orbit around the red planet.
This elliptical orbit will give MOM an orbital characteristic of 80,000 x 423 km and an orbital period of 75.8 Earth hours.
Once a stable orbit is achieved, the bulk of the mission’s primary objectives will be realized.
Stemming from the notion that this is a technology demonstration flight, the core concepts of the Mars Orbiter Mission are, according to ISRO: the design and realization of a Mars orbiter with a capability to preform Earth-bound maneuvers, cruise phase of 300 days, Mars orbit insertion/capture, and on-orbit phase operations at Mars.
Furthermore, the mission is designed to demonstrate India’s capability to perform deep space communication, navigation, mission planning, and management; and incorporate autonomous features to categorize and handle contingency situations.
2014-09-23 22_45_49-mars_orbiter_1385531570_540x540.jpg (540×583)In fact, so much is this mission one of technical demonstration that actual scientific observation of Mars is listed as a secondary objective.
Nonetheless, if all goes according to plan, once MOM enters orbit of Mars, the secondary mission objectives will be realized, too, with MOM exploring the Martian morphology, surface features, mineralogy, and atmosphere.
In fact, there is even the added benefit of working, after the fact, with NASA’s newly arrived MAVEN spacecraft in a post-data collection sharing of the information recorded by both spacecraft over the same period of time.
In all, the mission has already demonstrated India’s ability to perform in deep space; even more so, with orbital insertion of MOM achieved, India became only the fourth nation/space program to reach Mars (behind the former Soviet Union, NASA, and the European Space Agency).

10 Best Decisions by Modi Government in 100 Days.

On September 2, Modi Sarkar completes 100 days in Office. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Council of Ministers took Oath of Office and Secrecy on May 26, 10 days after the verdict 2014 was announced.

News starved media, joined by the Congress and its cohorts are desperately searching for the report card of Narendra Modi Government as it enters 100 days in the Office.

Honestly, all an independent commentator could say for now is that the story of India has changed between before and after May 26, the day Narendra Damodardas Modi took change as India’s 14thPrime Minister. He is simply focusing on fixing the 10-year-long policy paralysis of the previous UPA dispensation. His 100 days of work shows Modi Sarkar is on the right track.

Narendra Modi Government has shouldered loads of hopes and aspirations of the people. The Prime Minister looks confident to fulfill those hopes and aspirations. In the last 100 days, the nation has moved from an era of policy paralysis to an era of policy priorities. In 100 days in Office, the Narendra Modi Government has successfully prepared a roadmap for India’s development.

Ever since Modi took the reins, he has been continuing his focus on ‘Minimum Government and Maximum Governance’ in every step. Modi Government’s sheet anchor for governance ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas’ (Together with all, development for all) has instilled a sense of confidence among the citizens. Undoubtedly, a pro-active approach has been adopted by the Government to fulfill the aspirations of the people. There has been a major shift in work culture across Ministries. A new sense of accountability has gripped the bureaucracy. There is a tremendous amount of pressures on both the Ministers and the bureaucrats to fulfill the tide of expectations of people.

The following are the 10 things Modi Sarkar has achieved in its 100 days in Office:

1. Bringing back Black Money

The first decision Modi Sarkar took after assuming Office was setting up of a Special Investigative Team (SIT), headed by former Supreme Court Judge MB Shah, to unearth illegal money stashed in tax havens. The SIT has already prepared a comprehensive action plan, including creation of an institutional structure that could enable India to fight the battle against black money.

2. Bringing economy back on track

In a bid to arrest inflation, Modi Government asked States to delist fruits and vegetables from the Agriculture Produce Marketing Committee (APMC Act). This decision has protected farmers from the middle men and succeeded in preventing hoarding. This in turn has helped in taming inflation.

With inflation on check, economic growth is picking up steadily. It is important to note that Indian economy has thrown up the best growth figures in two-and-a-half years. The GDP growth in April-June quarter is the highest in the last nine quarters. This is a sufficient indication that economy is turning around under the leadership of Narendra Modi.

3. Jan Dhan Yojana

Modi Sarkar has rolled out the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana. The ambitious scheme aims at a comprehensive financial inclusion by opening of bank accounts of people who have been left out in the process so far. On the inauguration day, a record 1.5 crore bank accounts were opened under this scheme.

4. Infrastructural development

The focal point of the Union Budget 2014 was infrastructure, a sector which was neglected in the last 10 years under the Congress-led UPA rule. The Government has attracted large-scale investments in infrastructural sector by reviving the Special Economic Zone (SEZ), streamlining the Public Private Partnership (PPP) models and creating Infrastructural Investment Trusts (InvITs). Work for the ambitious Diamond Quadrilateral rail network — connecting major metros across the country — is in the full swing. The Narendra Modi Government has laid the groundwork for its ambitious ‘100 smart cities’ project. To develop infrastructure in rural areas, the Government has launched Syama Prasad Mookerjee Rurban Mission and Deendayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana. The Government is also working on strengthening and modernising the boarder infrastructure.

5. Abolishing GOMs, EGoMs

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has abolished all Group of Ministers (GoMs) and Empowered Group of Ministers (EGoMs) which were set up during the UPA tenure. The move is expediting the process of decision-making in the Ministries and ushering in a greater accountability in the system.

6. Streamlining bureaucracy

To take administration closer to people and ensure that governance doesn’t get stuck in red tape, the Narendra Modi Government is streamlining the bureaucracy with thrust on transparency. The Government has amended the All India Service (Conduct) Rules, 1968. The amended guidelines mandate that the bureaucrats must maintain political neutrality, take decisions and make recommendations on merit alone and take decisions solely in public interest.

7. Disbanding Planning Commission

Narendra Modi Government has disbanded the 64-year-old Planning Commission. In 1950, then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru formed Planning Commission on the line of erstwhile Soviet Union with an aim to formulating India’s five year plans. But during the 60-year-long Congress rule, the Commission was mostly used as a parking lot for cronies of the grand old party. They did nothing apart from sucking up to Congress and its Prime Ministers. Narendra Modi Government is in the process of replacing the Planning Commission with a new institution keeping in view of India’s needs amid changing global economic scenario.

8. Recasting judicial appointment

In a path-breaking initiative, Narendra Government has got the National Judicial Appointments Commission (NJAC) Bill passed in both the Houses of Parliament. The Bill scraps the Collegium System of appointment of Judges of Supreme Court and the High Courts and established a six-member body for the appointment of the Judges. The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court will head the NJAC. Besides, the judiciary would be represented by two senior Judges of the Supreme Court. Law Minister and two eminent personalities will be the other members of the Commission.

9. Weeding out archaic laws

The Narendra Modi Government is working overtime to weed out archaic rules and legislations from the statute books. Most of them are laws introduced during the colonial British rule and still prevalent in the country. These dysfunctional laws have no relevance in the present day. These are obsolete laws which only hamper governance by creating confusions. It only complicates the legislation process and stand as a hindrance within the system.

10. Bilateral diplomacy

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s SAARC diplomacy was indeed a bold step towards creating an atmosphere for multilateral economic cooperation. The common challenges that these nations face have made Narendra Modi create a common agenda of growth with mutual cooperation. During his visit to Nepal and Bhutan, Narendra Modi used the greater Hindu heritage as an instrument of foreign policy. Modi Government has given a strong message to Pakistan by calling off the Foreign Secretary-level talks after Pakistani High Commissioner to India Abdul Basit met Kashmiri separatists despite clear no from Foreign Ministry. For the first time in India’s history, New Delhi under the leadership of Narendra Modi has asserted that it can’t be bullied by the pressure from the Kashmiri separatists and various lobbyists. Narendra Modi’s ongoing Japan visit underlines the fact that India-Japan Strategic and Global cooperation can shift the balance of power in Asia.

100 days is too short a time to judge a Government. Let’s wait and watch with patience for the India’s real growth story to take shape in the days to come.

Mr. PM back to India with Trillions of Yen in Hand.

Drum listened by World

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday arrived back in Delhi after concluding his successful visit during which Japan promised to give USD 35 billion to India over the next 5 years for developmental projects.

The two countries also decided to enhance cooperation in defence and other strategic areas and also signed five pacts covering defence exchanges, cooperation in clean energy, roads and highways, healthcare and women while vowing to take their relationship to newer level.
Japan also lifted ban on six Indian entities including Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) which had been imposed in the aftermath of 1998 nuclear tests.
During the five-day visit, his first outside the subcontinent since becoming PM in May, Modi invited Japanese investments while hard-selling India as a conducive destination for business particularly for the manufacturing sector.
He told the Japanese businessmen that India was awaiting the investments with a 'red carpet' and not 'red tape' as rules and procedures have been eased by his government.
Winding up his official programme on Tuesday, Modi had expressed gratitude to Japan for reposing "trust" in India and demonstrating its friendship with a quip "yeh fevicol se be zyada mazboot jod hai (this bond is stronger than that of fevicol)".

"This visit has been very successful," Modi had said at the Indian community reception hosted in his honour in Tokyo earlier.
"There has been talk about billions and millions. But there has never been talk of trillions," he said, referring to 3.5 trillion Yen (USD 35 billion or 2,10,000 crore) promised by Japan to India through public and private funding over the five years for various works, including building of smart cities and cleanup of the Ganga river.
During the talks between Modi and Japanese PM Shinzo Abe, the two sides agreed to enhance their defence and strategic cooperation to a new level and also decided to speed up negotiations on civil nuclear deal that could not be concluded now.
Striking good personal chemistry, the two leaders had "very fruitful" exchanges.
Abe also went out of his way to receive Modi in Kyoto when he went there on August 30 in the first leg of his 5-day tour.
In Kyoto, a pact was signed under which Modi's Lok Sabha constituency Varanasi would be developed on the pattern of Kyoto 'smart city' with the help of Japan.
Abe also announced that as an example of Indo-Japan Cooperation, Tokyo will help India in providing financial, technical and operational support to introduce Bullet trains, a project that Modi has been actively pursuing.
"This is not just raising the relationship from one category to another... Our relationship is not only regional in its framework, but will have a global impact," Modi, who concluded his five-day visit to Japan, said.

DDA housing scheme launched : 25,034 flats to Grab.

The highly-anticipated 'Housing Scheme 2014' of the Delhi Development Authority (DDA) was launched on Monday at the Vikas Sadan, its headquarters , as locals and people from neighboring states stood in long queues to buy the application form on the very first day. About DDA Housing Scheme 2014 The biggest-ever flagship DDA scheme has offered total 25,034 flats ranging from various categories like 1 BHK flats, 2BHK flats and 3 BHK flats. The 2014 scheme offers flats ranging from Rs 7 lakh to Rs 1.2 crore across categories -- EWS, LIG, MIG, HIG, Janta flats and one-room apartments. "We are offering 25,034 flats in the scheme, out of which 22,627 are one-bed room apartments," Balvinder Kumar, Vice- Chairman, DDA, said. After launching the brochure of the DDA housing scheme 2014, a senior official told media persons that the draw would start after 15-20 days from the last date of the application forms. For the first time, DDA has introduced 5-year lock-in-period so that the buyers cannot sell the flat at least till 5 years and to cut out middlemen and reduce the scope of speculative buying. "After five years, the DDA will formally execute a conveyance deed in their favour," the DDA official said. The flats are located in areas such as Rohini, Jasola, Mukherjee Nagar, Shalimar Bagh, Narela, Dwarka, Dilshad Garden and Paschim Vihar. People can fill the application forms online till October 9, 2014, Thursday.
DDA has tied up with 13 banks from where applications forms can be purchased and submitted. The empanelled banks are Punjab National Bank, State Bank of India, Central Bank of India, Corporation Bank, Syndicate Bank, Union Bank of India, Indusland Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, IDBI Bank, ICICI Bank Ltd, Yes Bank, HDFC Bank and Axis Bank. The applicants will have to submit registration fee of Rs 10,000 for the Economically Weaker Section (EWS) category flats and Rs 1 lakh for 2BHK and 3 BHK flats. Those who won't be able to make up the to the "lucky list" of draw of the flats, would be fully refunded of their registration fee, within 15-20 days after the draw is announced. The urban body also for the first time had proposed a 80-20 quota in this scheme, but that proposal which sought to offer 80 per cent flats to Delhi residents has been scrapped. DDA is offering 700 flats for EWS category, which are part of the housing complex at Swatantra Bharat Mills premises on Rohtak Road. The flats have been developed by a private builder as part of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between the DDA and the builder. The EWS flats priced from Rs 7 lakh to Rs 11 lakh, the urban body said. Over 800 old flats located under different categories are also being offered, on account of them being cancelled or surrendered. These flats (older) consists of 21 HIG flats, 49 MIG, 451 LIG, 129 expendable and 161 Janta flats. The cost ranges from Rs 1.2 crore for HIG flats to Rs 5.4 lakh for Janta flats, the DDA said. The DDA had earlier said that the total number of flats on offer was over 26,000 but today said the figure has been revised to over 25,000. For the first time, DDA has also decided to do away with attachments along with the application forms and now only a photocopy of PAN card would be needed for the new one-page form, Kumar said. There is no income limit on one-bedroom apartments and any eligible candidate can apply. For EWS category, there will also be an option to pay the cost of the flats in instalments, she added. Any Indian citizen, 18 years of age and above on the date of filing of the application for the flats is eligible for the scheme. "In its last scheme, 'DDA Housing Scheme 2010', there were 11 lakh applications for 15,000 flats," a DDA spokesperson said, adding, "To curb black-marketing of forms, we have restricted the number of purchase to only two for each buyer".
First day, long queues of flat buyer hopefuls, DDA website crashes On the first of the launch of the scheme, the DDA site crashed following a massive online response, much too the dismay of those who wanted to apply for the flats on the first day. "Soon after the launch, we received over 5 lakh hits on our official website, following which it has crashed. Efforts are on to restore the service," a senior DDA official said. The one-bedroom apartment flats are in Dwarka, Rohini, Narela and Siraspur areas, priced above 14 lakh onwards, depending on the location and plinth area, the DDA said. Out of 896 newly-built flats, 512 are MIG flats and 384 Janta flats, located in Mukherjee Nagar, Narela, Rohini and Kalyan Vihar areas. The MIG flats would range from Rs 41.30 lakh and Rs 69.90 lakh and the Janta flats - one room tenement with a kitchentte - would cost a little over Rs 10 lakh, it said. "Nearly 20 lakh applicants are estimated to apply for this scheme and therefore we have printed about 15 lakh forms and brochures so far. But, if needed, we can print more. DDA flats- Dream of many people The DDA scheme is a dream of many people, who want to own a home for themeselves in the national capital. For 53-year-old M S Bisht, who hails from Nainital but has been a long-time resident of New Delhi, is hoping to be "lucky this time". "I have applied three times for DDA flats but all in vain so far. I am hoping to be lucky this time," Bisht, who lives in R K Puram in a government flat, said as he stood in the queue. Mukesh Kumar (52), another applicant who came from Meerut to buy the form on the very first day, said, "I want to return to Delhi." "I used to live in Delhi on rent but then there were some problems and I had to shift to Meerut. Now, I wish to return as my children are settled," he said. 70-year-old V S Tripathi, who retired as an officer in the defence department, is also keeping his fingers crossed this time as his previous bids to get a DDA flat have been unsuccessful. "I hail from Kanpur and I have always wanted a DDA flat but no success so far," he said. For housewife Babita from Moti Bagh area, who hails from Bihar, a house in Delhi means "a step towards a prosperous future". "Growth is happening in big cities and therefore, we are seeking future for us in cities like Delhi. No development is taking in small towns, what options do we have," she said.
